they used time that otherwise would have been wasted to listen to English and improve their skills. One young woman said that her husband thought she had become a bit strange because she talked to herself while cooking supper!
Here are some tips for working on your English.
Use Available Time and Adapt Recreational Activities to Assist your Learning.
- Take advantage of times when you are doing routine jobs at home to listen to and repeat content from an audio program.
- Use your time driving the car by listening to songs, radio programs or English language CD’s.
- Use a mobile phone or Blackberry to receive English content while you’re on a bus or train.
- Watch English language TV programs that interest you.
- Read English comics. The language is simple and the pictures will help you to understand. Don’t worry if you don’t “catch on” to the humor at first, you’ll “get it” as you practice.
- Watch English language movies.
- Read novels. You’ll learn a lot about English culture.
Listen and Practice in Complete Sentences
- Starting with the first lesson your goal is to be understood, so choose a program that teaches you to speak in complete sentences. When you learn complete sentences you’ll learn the grammar and the formal grammar will be easier for you.
- Everyone makes mistakes. Just correct yourself and keep on with your lesson.
- Invite some English speaking friends out for a coffee.
- Practice role-plays with your friends or family.
Pronunciation
- Listening to a native English speaker will guide your pronunciation. Remember, everyone has an accent. A few years ago the United Nations ruled that everyone’s accent is acceptable if the speaker can be understood.
- Listening to and repeating role-plays are a good way to learn to speak in a natural way. Practice taking different roles and review them a number of times.
- Some sounds like the English “Ll” and “Rr” are difficult for speakers of many languages. Don’t worry, just listen and repeat. Many people find these sounds difficult so don’t be discouraged.
Practice with a Friend on a Computer
- Work with a friend at your computer. Find songs that you enjoy on-line and sing-along. If possible play the same song many times and discuss the meaning with your friend.
- Find an on-line English program that provides an opportunity for you and your friend to listen to paragraphs, answer questions and listen to the answer. It’s a good idea to listen to the samples provided before you buy a program.
- Find interactive crossword puzzles that you can do with your friend on-line. Help each other to understand the definitions for the words.
Games Are a Great Way to Learn.
- Word Bingo games will help you to improve your vocabulary. These printable games are available for you to download to your computer. Find three or four friends and take turns calling the definitions.
- Printable Picture Bingo games are also available for you to download. (See Sample.) These will help you to learn the names of fruits, vegetables, foods, furniture and many other things.
These suggestions provide you with a list of choices for your approach to learning English. Think about them and try the ones that might be right for you. We suggest that you try a free sample before you buy a program. Only then can you be sure that that method of learning is right for you.
