Many students think that they can learn by reading their textbooks or studying, and tend not to treat listening as an important way of understanding English. For an ESL student, listening in high school or college classes is extremely important. Classroom activities are an effective way of providing students with many opportunities to listen and to speak.
Unfortunately – if listening skills are not fine tuned while students are in class, they will not fare well in business, as listening is a key component of being successful. A good listener doesn’t miss the nuances of things implied or important points referenced that can easily be a key factor later on when dealing with a business transaction.
Good listening techniques will be important for anyone’s future ability to communicate effectively with friends, lovers or business associates. They will make it easier to carry on conversations both in business and pleasure. Oftentimes mistakes are made or the wrong answer is given because we were not listening to what a person was saying or have misunderstood a question – thereby making the answer or response the wrong one. Practice with everyone you meet – listen and participate!
