To keep your students interested and attentive, it’s a good idea to have lots of fun activities for them to participate in. These should go along with the regular curriculum being studied, and reinforce the lessons being taught there. When you come to adjectives, teachers always find that the students need lots of practice. Here is a really lively activity that makes the students use adjectives, and at the same time have lots of fun.
For material, find an old mail order catalogue. Cut out pictures of young men and women models, enough for two for each student. (It is best that the pictures of models be fully clothed, otherwise, the class may get out of hand.) Then go through the catalogue and cut out pictures of appropriate gifts. Here, the teacher can use his or her imagination. Crazy gifts are always fun. You can cut out a picture of a cruise ship and print on it “Ocean cruise for two to Pango Pango”, or something like that. Then there are all the cosmetics, tools or articles of clothing. Cut out enough for each student to have two or three.
First, put out the pictures of the male and female models. Tell the class that they have taken a lover, and to come to the table and select a picture that looks like him or her. They are then to sit down and describe their lover.
While they are doing this, lay out the pictures of the gifts. When the students finish their descriptions, ask them to come and select two or three gifts for their lover. The students are then to write a paragraph about the gifts, telling what they chose, and why they chose them.
When this has been done, ask each student in turn to stand up and describe their lover to the class, show which gifts they selected for her or him, and why they chose the gifts.
To help the students with their descriptions, it’s a good idea to put a list of appropriate adjectives on the board for them to refer to.
You will see the students get out their dictionaries when they see this list. They may need help with a few of these adjectives.
Here are a few:
tall, strong, fragile, virile, dainty, brave, beautiful, handsome, wonderful, compassionate, loving, gentle, kind, intelligent, smart, rich, dreamy, sexy, good looking, warm, affectionate, interesting, dynamic, rugged, happy, ambitious, relaxed.
